Hannah Bates’ work examines post-industrial landscapes through sculpture and image. Through mold-making, casting, and assembling, she transforms collected artifacts into metal, glass, gypsum, and cement. Images function as another material, carrying traces of site, memory, and process. Objects and images are recontextualized to prompt reconsideration of human-environment relationships. Carefully crafted elements exist alongside unaltered pieces, creating a tension between what is found and what is fabricated. By recontextualizing artifacts and images, she invites reflection on the intertwined histories of human activity and ecological processes.
